We live in an age where, because of the dispersion and breadth of knowledge, we may find ourselves with little knowledge. This is fine, not a judgement call. For those that may not know what the traditional Thanksgiving meal may entail, this will be helpful. For us Gourmands, I find it an endlessly worthwhile exercise to start with the basics. We should have a different perspective each time.
The other value of it is to use as a guide for your own menu - you can rediscover, add, omit to your liking.
The traditional meal would include, and linked to our liking of varying source recipes:
Roast Turkey - Food Network - best word we've heard, 'let the turkey do its thing'
Gravy - Tastes Better From Scratch - good gravy should pop
Stuffing - How Sweets - spices should be alike a good sausage
Mashed Potatoes - Bon Appetit - go for creamy, go for rich
Cranberry Sauce - All Recipes - always from scratch, so easy and satisfying
Green Bean Casserole - Spend With Pennies - add a touch of apple cider vinegar
Sweet Potato Casserole - 12 Tomatoes - root vegetables are the best this time of year
Bread Rolls - Spend With Pennies - homemade is always best
Pumpkin Pie - Sally's Baking Addiction - cloves, think about it
Running a close second:
Macaroni and Cheese - The Chunky Chef - Gruyere
Apple Pie - Sally's Baking Addiction - go for crumbling topping
Brussel Sprouts - Southern Living - really bone up on a good Brussel Sprouts recipe, you shan't go wrong
Cornbread - Feast & Farm - need to try to make one
Creamed Corn - Deep South Dish - try it, you'll be happy you did, also keep lots of heavy whipping cream on hand for the holidays
Glazed Carrots - Recipe Tin Eats - such a nice palate cleanser between dishes
As we review these recipes, we know we've learned a thing or two!
Happy Turkey Day!
